NameChang House
Mandarin Name壯圍張宅
DescriptionYilan|Chang HouseA Dwelling That Breathes Along with NatureFollowing the perfectly straight country road, you drive into a golden rice paddy with farm houses scattered throughout. Rolling down the window, you stretch your head out to admire Yilan’s pastoral landscape, the rice stalks by the roadside laiden with grain sway in the gentle breeze to welcome travelers. Following the road signs onwards, you approach your destination: Chang House, in perfect harmony with the natural world, and enveloped in the breeze rich with the aroma of rice.Tasting local refreshments in a classic Yilan residenceHanson is the owner of Chang House. Wearing a warm smile and wooden clogs, he walks out to greet you, leading you along the slate pathway into the back yard. Pushing open the screen door, the wind and sunlight dance together as you see the unique desserts and traditional refreshments that Chang and the housekeepers have prepared for you. As they place the local flavors of Yilan upon the table, you admire the plate arrangement and local ingredients. Taste a bite of kumkuat, enjoying the sweet & sour flavor; salted plum cakes, a local delicacy, stuffed with dehydrated fruit, get sweeter the longer they are chewed; roasted wheat flour tea with a sprinkle of crispy bun cake combines the most classic traditional flavors; wash it all down with a cup of warm honey peach black tea to warm the stomach and the heart.Designed by famous architect Huang Sheng-yuan, Chang House is the most representative residential building in Yilan. The height of the ground floor allows one to appreciate both the view of the fields and the painting-like mountain scenery. Slow down your pace and appreciate the rhythmic interaction between the courtyard and the surrounding natural environment. Even when sitting indoors under the midday sun, you can sense the movement of the wind. The sun floods indoors through large floor-to-ceiling windows, bright and warm. The cubic structure, the square-shaped courtyard, the single pink plumeria tree highlight the year-round beauty of Chang House.A home accordant with nature and founded on peopleEight years in construction, Chang House is founded upon people, accordant with nature, and fused with the local culture. “Looking down at the design of our house from above, you can see the square-within-a-square shape (回) of the Chinese character for return. It is built upon the concept of home, which is precisely what I wanted.” In order to implement this ideal, Hanson waited eight years for the design and construction to be completed. He used patience and trust to exchange for what he loved most.Moving alone from Yilan to Taipei, Hanson got a job as a hairdresser after graduating from high school in order to help ease his family’s economic pressure. Along the way, he met the most important person in his life - Sister Lan. After saving a bit of money, they decided to move together to Yilan and build a home they could call their own. Even though an accident quietly took Sister Lan from this world, her warm spirit had already had a profound influence on Chang House. Hanson says that the property upon which Chang House is built was bought by Sister Lan, so no matter what, he must continue her dream of making her dreamland a reality. The greatest luxury is in fact very simpleChang House’s five suites have all been named after the rooms formerly inhabited by members of Hanson’s family: the Master Bedroom, the Mother Room, the Eldest Daughter Room, the Little Daughter Room, and the Guest Room. All rooms are simple and elegant, while retaining a cozy warmth. Hanson lived with his family in this home for ten years before deciding to share it with the outside world, allowing even more people to stay in a local Yilan residence. His hope was that travelers could also share in their experience of life in this special living room and in this courtyard. In the morning, you enjoy a delicious Chinese-style home cooked meal made entirely of seasonal vegetables and fruit grown in their own garden. Afterwards, you lie in the spacious front yard enjoying the aroma of the rice paddies. In the afternoon, you curl up in a corner of the courtyard with a book. The evening is the most important time of day at Chang House - you climb to the rooftop from where you can enjoy the expansive natural scenery. This is the most magical moment of all, when the golden sun setting beneath orange clouds creates a splendid play of light and shadow across the open fields. It has been said that human beings require sunlight, air, water, and trees. After coming to Chang House, you realize that all you need to do is open your eyes and relax your mind, and all at once, all of these wonderful elements are yours!

NameSaikaukin House
Mandarin Name屎溝墘客廳
DescriptionTainan|Sai Kau Kin Old HouseGold in the Gutter, An Old House that Spans Three CenturiesWalking at an unhurried pace through the narrow streets of the old capital city, you turn down Xinyi Street, walking past a mixture of residences both old and new. Eventually, you stop before an old wooden door painted white with couplets handwritten on red paper framing the doorway - on the horizontal scroll above the door are the characters for Sai Kau Kin Old House. You lightly push the door open, feeling the wealth of stories it must contain, and are seemingly transported a century into the past to a beautiful bygone time. The story begins with a smelly riverSai Kau Kin (literally “The Bank of the Open Sewer”) is the name of the northernmost tributary in Wu Tiao Gang (“Five Channels Harbor”). In olden days, it was used for the storage and transportation of the city’s sewage waters, hence the rather smelly sounding name. Built in 1897, the old house of today’s visit is located on the bank of this river channel. After construction of the Tainan Canal was completed, the accumulating silt and sludge filled up the channel, at which time residents in the area began to expand their dwellings outward and upward, creating the Sai Kau Kin living environment that we see today. As you set foot in Sai Kau Kin Old House, the simple wooden construction, the bamboo and wicker furniture exhibits the classical style of life in Tainan. James, the owner of the guesthouse, chose the name Sai Kau Kin Old House in the hopes of preserving the local culture, and of giving people a place to enjoy a life of freedom and ease. The roof beams overhead, the pebble-inlaid flooring underfoot, and the red brick wall all preserve the traces of history. More than a hundred years ago, during the era of Japanese occupation, the Japanese came to Tainan to implement plans for urban renewal and tore down many old city walls and buildings. The workers from the local harbors collected these bricks dating back to the era of Dutch occupation and the Ming and Qing dynasties, using them to build their own houses.Deep conversations with an old soulThis is a house that spans three centuries, as well as James’s old family home. Over forty years ago, James’s father bought this old house to provide his parents with a place to enjoy their golden years in peace. However, his parents later moved elsewhere, after which time this old house sat vacant for over twenty years. It wasn’t until 2011 that James decided to return to live in Tainan, with the belief that, “The true value of Tainan is to be found in these old laneways, these old houses, and this culture.” Thus he set about rebuilding the old building into a guesthouse with the intention of sharing memories and stories of the past with his travelling guests. Illuminated by the warm sunshine, travelers climb the steep wooden steps, arriving at the “Ballast Room” which is decorated with collected items from James’s travels through Europe when he was a young man. “This house is like a centenarian, it actually has a soul!” Continuing on, James invites you to walk barefoot upon the wooden floorboards, which sing their creaky song with every step you take.As you climb even higher, you reach the top-floor sleeping quarters. On a peaceful afternoon, you recline on the old sofa lost in thought, and looking out across the sloping open balcony which has no enclosing walls, you see all the neighboring rooftop balconies. Turning around, you notice that behind you there is another sliding door which connects to the “Matsu Room” in the attic. Looking out from the small hatch-like window, you feel like a child again, hiding in a small corner and peering out at the scenery of the laneways below. In the tranquility of night, you close your eyes, the gentle smell of rushes accompanies you as you drift into dreams of olden days.Still, the story of an old city continuesIn the morning, with Sai Kau Kin Old House as your starting point, you begin to walk along Xinyi Street. This place is different than other cities - there are no high-rise apartment buildings, only short old single-story houses one after another. These gifts that time and history have left to the city reveal the culture and enchanting atmosphere of which the people of Tainan are so proud.Xinyi Street lies between the Matsu Building and the Jifu Temple, and so receives the protection of these two great deities. It is the kind of precious land found in legends, and the place where James was born. After growing up, he backpacked around Europe and Asia, travelling to Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China, even experiencing the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Tiananmen Square incident and other significant historical events, all of which nourished him to become who he is today. Afterwards, he attended advanced courses at Tokyo College of Photography. After returning to Taiwan James and his wife first decided to return to Tainan to establish their own photography studio. After striving for more than twenty years, they happened to encounter the Foundation of Historic City Conservation and Regeneration. Deeply moved by their philosophy, it was after this time that James began to operate his guesthouse and put down roots in the local culture.Beyond the operation of his guesthouse, James also devotes his efforts to putting on all kinds of different activities pertaining to arts and culture, establishing Sai Kau Kin Old House as an arts and culture space to increase interaction and exchange within the community. Check-in to Sai Kau Kin, sip a cup of tea, savour the slow passage of time, and look forward to the memories written down by each and every traveler who comes by to visit.

Name: Saikaukin House
Mandarin Name: 屎溝墘客廳
Description: Tainan|Sai Kau Kin Old HouseGold in the Gutter, An Old House that Spans Three CenturiesWalking at an unhurried pace through the narrow streets of the old capital city, you turn down Xinyi Street, walking past a mixture of residences both old and new. NameCat Sky Country B&B
Mandarin Name貓天空鄉村民宿
DescriptionYilan|Cat Sky HouseFollow the cat to a playful old house in the countrysideA comfortable autumn breeze blows through Yilan, as the Annong River reflects the dazzling sunlight. Strolling along a country lane between farmers’ fields as chickens cluck and dogs bark, you somehow feel like closing your eyes when suddenly your gaze is caught by a building colored red and orange: Cat Sky House, the brightest traditional courtyard home on the bank of the Annong River, sits waiting between rice paddies for travelers to visit.Rich and delightful countryside courtyard homeWalking into the courtyard at Cat Sky House, everything is brightly colored, with cute, playfully arranged scenes all around. The courtyard preserves the traditional cement ground covering, as grass grows in cracks that opened up in the cement many years before. Several cats, stretching out beneath a red sun parasol, continue rolling around. Your host Lisa walks toward you with a smile. After retirement, she and her husband, Paul bought this house, originally in ruins, for the street cats that they had adopted. They have since remodeled it into a cute courtyard house full of cats. The moment you enter the house, you are greeted by a warm aroma - you discover that it’s the smell of the home-baked welcome cookies being prepared by Miss Tian, the housekeeper. In the kitchen, the same warm color theme you have seen elsewhere at Cat Sky House continues, and the old wood-burning hearth remains as well. Watching Miss Tian’s busy movements, you feel a sense of returning to your family home in the countryside. And why have they chosen Yilan as the place to pursue life after retirement? Originally living in Taipei, Lisa says with a laugh, “We do it all for these little animals!” Following the growth and independence of her children, Lisa gradually started to adopt cats. First one, then another, then a third… the more cat adoption information she saw, the more she took in, and before she knew it she had seven or eight cats living in her home! A while later, after going on a trip with several friends, they suddenly became inspired to buy a house in Yilan where they could retire to one day, to live together and take care of one another. This was the birth of Cat Sky House. As Lisa says with a laugh, “You have to have your own life!” Retirement is not the finale, it is the start of a new life.Peaceful, easy times in the countryCat Sky House only entertains a single group of guests at any given time, so you can relax completely and enjoy the company of your friends in your own exclusive building. This country-style home filled with miscellaneous goods will set you completely at ease. Stepping into the bedroom, you take in the colorful decor on the roof beams, as well as the cute figurines lying on the bed and in front of the windows. The pristine white sheets are soft and welcoming, inviting you to fall asleep to the singing sounds of insects.Walking outdoors, Paul excitedly shows you the sweet potato leaves he just picked in order to give traveling guests the most natural, flavorful breakfast possible the following morning. At this time, however, a sumptuous afternoon tea has been prepared to welcome you, and it is up to you whether you enjoy it outdoors or inside. Sitting in a corner of the courtyard, admiring the expansive country fields and the soothing breeze, you enjoy passionfruit jam on handmade cookies with hibiscus wax gourd tea. Chickens cluck as they walk around the courtyard in a scene that seems right out of a peaceful, pastoral painting.A sumptuous countryside breakfastYou wake at the break of dawn to the sound of clucking chickens, barking dogs and the aromatic breakfast that awaits you. Walking to the breakfast table, you’ll certainly be shocked at first sight of the table full of sumptuous foods. You may even think you’ve overslept and your hosts have skipped right to preparing lunch! Besides Paul’s own sweet potato leaves and corn, there is a host of other seasonal vegetables. Delicious egg flatbreads sprinkled with cilantro delight the taste buds. Lisa proudly states, “Our egg flatbreads are made with indica rice milk, making them softer, and they’re really hard to come by!” At that moment, the housekeeper delivers a freshly baked pizza to the table! The melted cheese invites you to eat just one more slice. After you are full, Lisa will provide you with all the info you need about local sights to see.Cat Sky House maintains the old-school retro lifestyle and pastoral tranquility of an old courtyard home in the countryside. In such a place, time simply slows down. With Lisa’s humor and Paul’s warmth, you’ll certainly see how genuine the interaction between people can be. When you arrive at Cat Sky House, you’ll see just how fun the countryside can be. In this old courtyard home, you can even follow the cats’ lead, to gaze upon a new slice of sky.
