內容 | The Environmental Protection Administration (EPA)todayannounced river remediationresults for 6 rivers and creeks, including TianliaoRiver, Keelung; Zhonggang Main Drainage, New Taipei City; Wannian Creek,Pingtung; Fengshan Creek, Kaohsiung; Liu Creek, Taichung; and Old Street Creek, Taoyuan. It is estimated that over a millionpeople will benefit.
In order to improvethe quality of life for people living in metropolitan areas, the Environmental Protection Administration, Executive Yuan has targeted metropolitanriverrestorationand remediationasthe focus of its environmental work. Since the 2008 Maintenance of Riversand MarineWater QualityImprovement Plan(Phase 2), such strategies as intercepting sewage, introducing clean water, andwaterfrontrejuvenation have been used to remediaterivers and creeks.
Xu Yongxing,Director of the Water Quality Protection Department,Environmental Protection Administration, described the above6metropolitanrivers. He noted that the original river bed had either been sealed or covered withparking lots orhouses,which led tostagnant and dirtyrivers, reducing the public’s opportunity to get closer tothe waterfront and rivers.
Mr. Xu said that in orderto enhance river and coastal environments and givepeoplemore aquatic space, the 6metropolitanrivers above are currently intercepting sewage and using gravelcontact oxidation to improve water quality. In addition, waste water is recycled for treatment and filtration, and then returned to therivers as clean water. After completing the 6river remediation projects, overall 240,000 tons of waste water will be intercepted andprocessed every day.
Mr. Xu also noted that after completion of theremediation projects, the Environmental Protection Administration will also coordinate with the construction of riverside aquatic facilities,thusimproving the overall metropolitan environment. It is estimated that around 1.62million urban inhabitants will benefit from these projects.
