NameTong Zhuang Homestay
Mandarin Name桐莊
DescriptionMiaoli|House of Tung FlowersWhite snow in a mountain forest; the delight of Tung flower landFollowing Provincial Highway Six up into the mountains, you breathe the sweet, clear air of Miaoli County. Turning down a winding mountain road, you see a flurry of snow-like Tung flowers - the so-called May Snows. Trees encompass the road from both sides as you approach your beautiful mountain destination - House of Tung Flowers. Between the elegance of nature and the deliciousness of exquisitely prepared meals, you savor the taste of happiness.Afternoon tea in the mountains beneath the Tung treesThe layered green landscape of House of Tung Flowers unfolds before your eyes, with a lofty tung tree standing directly in the middle of the gardens, quietly extending its branches to bathe in the warm sunlight. You set out across a wooden pathway strewn with Tung flowers and resembling snow-covered ground, and stroll between the Tung, Phoebe zhennan, umbrella, and camellia assamica trees. The mountain breeze rustles the tree leaves as the sounds of insects and birds enters your ears, uniting into a lively forest concerto. In the afternoon, you enter the glass-walled tea room, with light spilling in from all sides. To one side sits a dessert cabinet full of sweets from the famous RT Bakery House. Have as much as you like, along with hot tea and coffee. Seated indoors or out, the scenery is beautiful any season of the year, not just during the Tung flower season. In spring, fresh emerald-green leaves sprout all around. In summer, the tung trees produce a snow of white flowers. In autumn, the maples shine red in the forest. And in winter, the mountain forests are shrouded in clouds and mist.Resting between fragrant trees, taste a creative, menu-free Hakka-style mealStepping into the three-story building, the scent of Chinese fir filling the entire space relieves your exhausted mind. At House of Tung Flowers, the furnishings in each room are made of solid wood, accentuated with exquisite antique lamps, and include a capsule coffee machine and complementary RT Bakery House cookies. The interior design includes Japanese tatami mats as well as wooden rocking chairs, with large windows that afford beautiful views of the mountain forests. You can sit on the balcony and breathe phytoncides from the comfort of hanging chairs, or soak in the bathtub to completely relax. With a maximum capacity of 20 people, House of Tung Flowers is well-suited for a family or a group of friends to reserve the entire wooden structure. With karaoke in the first floor common room and a small living room on the third floor where family and friends can play chess or chat with each other.A one night stay includes three meals, yet the thing most anticipated by visitors to House of Tung Flowers is the menu-free fusion dinner incorporating local ingredients and traditional Hakka flavors. Red date vinegar is used to start the meal off, followed by lotus root wrapped in the sweetness of Hakka-style grass jelly made of Chinese mesona. A bamboo steamer full of fresh seasonal vegetables with homemade kumquat sauce satisfies all the senses. A uniquely flavored bean curd chicken soup, served with crisp bread stuffed with Italian rice-flour noodles emits distinct Italian aroma. The sweet fish imparts the fresh sweetness of the sea, while the broiled Japanese beef (wagyu) simply cannot be missed. Finally, enjoy a bite of delicate almond tofu and a glass from host James’s private wine collection to bring your beautiful evening to a close. In contrast with one’s impression of the usual fixed villa menu, the food at House of Tung Flowers employs meticulous western-style techniques and the ingenious fusion of Hakka cuisine and Taiwanese ingredients to bring to each traveler an elegant and refined dining experience. James - promoting Taiwan’s tung flower season for the appreciation of the entire worldIn the morning, the mountain breeze urges you toward the breakfast table, where yet another sumptuous meal is laid out. Many summers ago, James decided to open his family home up to the public, to share the beautiful scenery with travelers by opening a guesthouse. The Hakka Affairs Council seized the opportunity to promote the Hakka tung flower season to attract large quantities of tourists, during which time House of Tung Flowers operates at full capacity every single day. Today, James has a full head of gray hair, yet in those first days, he truly was a pioneer, leading the way in the tung flower tourist market. With his endless Hakka passion and hospitality, he has been a great advocate of tung flower tourism during the month of May. Who would guess that he grew up in the Ximending neighborhood in Taipei! Yet he had always hoped to one day live in the tranquility of nature. Upon entering society, he continued his father’s construction business. At the turn of the millennium, in a time when many people could not even recognize a tung tree, he had come to admire the largest tung tree in Taiwan, right here beside House of Tung Flowers. He built his guesthouse and launched his one night, three meals slow living holiday package so that travelers can live in the mountains, and enjoy the tung flowers and delicious food. “Taiwan has many qualifications which surpass those of other countries, so we need to look at things from a new perspective, drawing in a tide of tourists from abroad, in order for Taiwan to build confidence!” With his warmth and sincerity, James invites travelers from around the world to come to this tranquil forest, to enjoy the tung flowers fluttering on the May breeze, like beautiful snow swirling in the air, and savor the taste of a truly happy vacation.

DescriptionYilan|Fengchun VillaA Mountain Retreat that is Peaceful Year RoundA fine drizzle falls upon the leaves, sliding off into the pool below one drop at a time. You stand and look into the distance, and beyond the water droplets sparkling on the soft lawn, an immense scene unfolds before your eyes: layers of dark and light green leading up to mountain peaks, with a light blue stream tracing a path across it all. The clouds and mist slowly disperse, little by little revealing the mountain’s complexion. Rain or shine, this mountain retreat is peaceful year round - Fengchun Villa.A tranquil residence concealed within the mountainsAfter following a winding little road up into the mountains, you park your car and let the refreshing air encircle your nose. To one side, the main doors have been left open for you, so you stroll into the hidden territory which is Fengchun Villa. You admire the lush lawn beside the sloping road, decorated with a few European statues and wooden lawn chairs. You walk deeper into the gardens and Lilysan comes forward extending a warm greeting. Arriving at the semi-open scenic lookout space, you enjoy the tea and snacks that have been prepared for you: organic honey fragrance black tea from a nearby tea farm, dragon fruit from Fengchun Villa’s own gardens, and green bean cakes. You look out over the vast scenery before you as any worries that were hiding deep in your heart are carried away on the gentle mountain breeze.Fengchun Villa was established in 1989 when Lilysan finished her previous business and bought this vacation garden property. Nearly four acres in size, Lilysan and her family prepared and constructed it all themselves. They didn’t expect that this quiet mountain lifestyle, away from the bustle of the city, would attract many family and friends to visit. This inspired the family to construct a white, European style building to serve as a guesthouse, choosing to name it Fengchun after the pen name of an ancestor. As a way to allow the name of their ancestors’ Fengchun Trading Company to live on, they used the same enthusiasm to operate Fengchun Villa as their ancestors did their trading company. An intimate time for self-healingStepping into the house, you smell the mild fragrance of cunninghamia, a type of cypress wood imported from Laos, and it puts your mind at ease. The various guest rooms are named after local birds and are available in many different layouts to meet the different needs of travelers. Taking off your shoes, you admire the abundant greenery outside the massive windows. Reclining beside a window or walking out onto the balcony, the gentle golden light of sunset caresses your body. You pour yourself a hot cup of tea and in this way, feel the slow passage of time. You reserve the afternoon just for yourself, allowing the peaceful view to wash the exhaustion from your train of thoughts. In Fengchun Villa, besides the enjoyment of spacious interior accommodations, you can also make reservations for an infrared foot bath, sauna, or energy space experience. In the evening, the Fengchun Villa menu of rich and sumptuous mountain cuisine is sure to satisfy your taste buds and completely relax both your body and mind.Relaxed and restful mountain lifeThe gentle morning sun signals the start of a new day, urging you toward the table to enjoy a lavish breakfast. You admire the elaborate oil paintings of your host as the mountain air fills you with energy. As a part of your spontaneous vacation, you might set off with your hosts on a scavenger hunt into the mountains, or make reservations for a Chinese tea ceremony. Either of these may help you regain a healthy rhythm for your life, allowing you to experience true comfort from the bottom of your heart, and enjoy the carefree passage of time in the mountains!

NameBLACK TEA WORKSHOP
Mandarin Name紅茶工房
DescriptionOne day, a child raised beneath the black tea tree decided to leave the workplace behind and return to a place of serene mountains and the scenic countryside, his pure spiritual and life hometown, in order to live with the black tea plants and help the garden that raised him continue to grow sustainably. When the two children put aside their work and decide to help their parents, Black Tea Workshop was born! United in heart and mind, the family entered the world of black tea one step at a time. In order to realize their dream, they started with the designs, and following much debate, decided on a Tudor architectural style – simple, natural, refined, and down-to-earth. They drew up several designs matching the scale of their ideas for lattice windows which let in sunlight and greenery while providing great views. After cutting, pasting, and comparing, they decided on an ideal rectangular 4:3 ratio, changing the deep, narrow Tudor windows into a larger, wider design. For the color coordination of the building’s exterior, they not only diligently searched the Internet to select roof tiles, colors, magnets, tiles, and wood floors, but also visited manufacturers around Taichung to compare and contrast until they found the right texture and patterns. The bed and breakfast’s rooms are named based on the theme of black tea, such as Black Tea Seed, Black Tea Ren, Workshop Aged Tea, and Taiwanese Tea No. 18. The rooms also feature different-themed decoration, with the characters or pictures created by the workshop family or photographs subjected to a special pressure proces, giving them a unique, original style. In order to help guests feel at home, black tea pillows are provided, filling the room with a faint fragrance. The pillows are made by the three generations of family members who run the business and have been personally involved in everything from producing tea to sewing pillows. In addition to the fragrance of the pillows, the room walkways feature pictures detailing the process of hard work that goes into making pillows. In keeping with the black tea theme, room lights are designed with black tea leaves, and under the contrast of the soft light, the leaves spread out, contributing to Black Tea Workshop’s unique style. Rooms are spacious and well-lit inside and out, simple and refined in layout, and faintly fragrant of black tea – features provided by the Black Tea Workshop family in order to provide honored guests with the best and most comfortable atmosphere. The main goal of the workshop is sustainable management of the old tea garden, which naturally makes the old trees the point of focus. So before the 2010 Chinese New Year, in the dead of winter which is the best time for transplanting, the old trees are moved from the garden inside the house to be taken care of. We currently grow them in the Black Tea Workshop courtyard, where they accompany us each day. The days pass just as they once did amidst the tea trees; even when we don’t go to the garden anymore, we feel their presence. When you come to Black Tea Workshop, please take a close look at them. These are the trees that raised our family, standing strong and tall, braving winds and rain for over sixty years! Black Tea Workshop also features cuisine made from old tea garden black tea and seasonal fruits and vegetables. Our specialty milk tea blends the fragrance of milk and tea, refreshing without being overly sweet, and goes well with our handmade cookies and black tea cheesecake. Black Tea Workshop is a place that will leave wonderful memories! This is Black Tea Workshop! A small, warm, beautiful, carefree place!

Name: BLACK TEA WORKSHOP
Mandarin Name: 紅茶工房
Description: One day, a child raised beneath the black tea tree decided to leave the workplace behind and return to a place of serene mountains and the scenic countryside, his pure spiritual and life hometown, in order to live with the black tea plants and help the garden that raised him continue to grow sustainably. NameSaikaukin House
Mandarin Name屎溝墘客廳
DescriptionTainan|Sai Kau Kin Old HouseGold in the Gutter, An Old House that Spans Three CenturiesWalking at an unhurried pace through the narrow streets of the old capital city, you turn down Xinyi Street, walking past a mixture of residences both old and new. Eventually, you stop before an old wooden door painted white with couplets handwritten on red paper framing the doorway - on the horizontal scroll above the door are the characters for Sai Kau Kin Old House. You lightly push the door open, feeling the wealth of stories it must contain, and are seemingly transported a century into the past to a beautiful bygone time. The story begins with a smelly riverSai Kau Kin (literally “The Bank of the Open Sewer”) is the name of the northernmost tributary in Wu Tiao Gang (“Five Channels Harbor”). In olden days, it was used for the storage and transportation of the city’s sewage waters, hence the rather smelly sounding name. Built in 1897, the old house of today’s visit is located on the bank of this river channel. After construction of the Tainan Canal was completed, the accumulating silt and sludge filled up the channel, at which time residents in the area began to expand their dwellings outward and upward, creating the Sai Kau Kin living environment that we see today. As you set foot in Sai Kau Kin Old House, the simple wooden construction, the bamboo and wicker furniture exhibits the classical style of life in Tainan. James, the owner of the guesthouse, chose the name Sai Kau Kin Old House in the hopes of preserving the local culture, and of giving people a place to enjoy a life of freedom and ease. The roof beams overhead, the pebble-inlaid flooring underfoot, and the red brick wall all preserve the traces of history. More than a hundred years ago, during the era of Japanese occupation, the Japanese came to Tainan to implement plans for urban renewal and tore down many old city walls and buildings. The workers from the local harbors collected these bricks dating back to the era of Dutch occupation and the Ming and Qing dynasties, using them to build their own houses.Deep conversations with an old soulThis is a house that spans three centuries, as well as James’s old family home. Over forty years ago, James’s father bought this old house to provide his parents with a place to enjoy their golden years in peace. However, his parents later moved elsewhere, after which time this old house sat vacant for over twenty years. It wasn’t until 2011 that James decided to return to live in Tainan, with the belief that, “The true value of Tainan is to be found in these old laneways, these old houses, and this culture.” Thus he set about rebuilding the old building into a guesthouse with the intention of sharing memories and stories of the past with his travelling guests. Illuminated by the warm sunshine, travelers climb the steep wooden steps, arriving at the “Ballast Room” which is decorated with collected items from James’s travels through Europe when he was a young man. “This house is like a centenarian, it actually has a soul!” Continuing on, James invites you to walk barefoot upon the wooden floorboards, which sing their creaky song with every step you take.As you climb even higher, you reach the top-floor sleeping quarters. On a peaceful afternoon, you recline on the old sofa lost in thought, and looking out across the sloping open balcony which has no enclosing walls, you see all the neighboring rooftop balconies. Turning around, you notice that behind you there is another sliding door which connects to the “Matsu Room” in the attic. Looking out from the small hatch-like window, you feel like a child again, hiding in a small corner and peering out at the scenery of the laneways below. In the tranquility of night, you close your eyes, the gentle smell of rushes accompanies you as you drift into dreams of olden days.Still, the story of an old city continuesIn the morning, with Sai Kau Kin Old House as your starting point, you begin to walk along Xinyi Street. This place is different than other cities - there are no high-rise apartment buildings, only short old single-story houses one after another. These gifts that time and history have left to the city reveal the culture and enchanting atmosphere of which the people of Tainan are so proud.Xinyi Street lies between the Matsu Building and the Jifu Temple, and so receives the protection of these two great deities. It is the kind of precious land found in legends, and the place where James was born. After growing up, he backpacked around Europe and Asia, travelling to Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong, and China, even experiencing the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Tiananmen Square incident and other significant historical events, all of which nourished him to become who he is today. Afterwards, he attended advanced courses at Tokyo College of Photography. After returning to Taiwan James and his wife first decided to return to Tainan to establish their own photography studio. After striving for more than twenty years, they happened to encounter the Foundation of Historic City Conservation and Regeneration. Deeply moved by their philosophy, it was after this time that James began to operate his guesthouse and put down roots in the local culture.Beyond the operation of his guesthouse, James also devotes his efforts to putting on all kinds of different activities pertaining to arts and culture, establishing Sai Kau Kin Old House as an arts and culture space to increase interaction and exchange within the community. Check-in to Sai Kau Kin, sip a cup of tea, savour the slow passage of time, and look forward to the memories written down by each and every traveler who comes by to visit.
