NameTong Zhuang Homestay
Mandarin Name桐莊
DescriptionMiaoli|House of Tung FlowersWhite snow in a mountain forest; the delight of Tung flower landFollowing Provincial Highway Six up into the mountains, you breathe the sweet, clear air of Miaoli County. Turning down a winding mountain road, you see a flurry of snow-like Tung flowers - the so-called May Snows. Trees encompass the road from both sides as you approach your beautiful mountain destination - House of Tung Flowers. Between the elegance of nature and the deliciousness of exquisitely prepared meals, you savor the taste of happiness.Afternoon tea in the mountains beneath the Tung treesThe layered green landscape of House of Tung Flowers unfolds before your eyes, with a lofty tung tree standing directly in the middle of the gardens, quietly extending its branches to bathe in the warm sunlight. You set out across a wooden pathway strewn with Tung flowers and resembling snow-covered ground, and stroll between the Tung, Phoebe zhennan, umbrella, and camellia assamica trees. The mountain breeze rustles the tree leaves as the sounds of insects and birds enters your ears, uniting into a lively forest concerto. In the afternoon, you enter the glass-walled tea room, with light spilling in from all sides. To one side sits a dessert cabinet full of sweets from the famous RT Bakery House. Have as much as you like, along with hot tea and coffee. Seated indoors or out, the scenery is beautiful any season of the year, not just during the Tung flower season. In spring, fresh emerald-green leaves sprout all around. In summer, the tung trees produce a snow of white flowers. In autumn, the maples shine red in the forest. And in winter, the mountain forests are shrouded in clouds and mist.Resting between fragrant trees, taste a creative, menu-free Hakka-style mealStepping into the three-story building, the scent of Chinese fir filling the entire space relieves your exhausted mind. At House of Tung Flowers, the furnishings in each room are made of solid wood, accentuated with exquisite antique lamps, and include a capsule coffee machine and complementary RT Bakery House cookies. The interior design includes Japanese tatami mats as well as wooden rocking chairs, with large windows that afford beautiful views of the mountain forests. You can sit on the balcony and breathe phytoncides from the comfort of hanging chairs, or soak in the bathtub to completely relax. With a maximum capacity of 20 people, House of Tung Flowers is well-suited for a family or a group of friends to reserve the entire wooden structure. With karaoke in the first floor common room and a small living room on the third floor where family and friends can play chess or chat with each other.A one night stay includes three meals, yet the thing most anticipated by visitors to House of Tung Flowers is the menu-free fusion dinner incorporating local ingredients and traditional Hakka flavors. Red date vinegar is used to start the meal off, followed by lotus root wrapped in the sweetness of Hakka-style grass jelly made of Chinese mesona. A bamboo steamer full of fresh seasonal vegetables with homemade kumquat sauce satisfies all the senses. A uniquely flavored bean curd chicken soup, served with crisp bread stuffed with Italian rice-flour noodles emits distinct Italian aroma. The sweet fish imparts the fresh sweetness of the sea, while the broiled Japanese beef (wagyu) simply cannot be missed. Finally, enjoy a bite of delicate almond tofu and a glass from host James’s private wine collection to bring your beautiful evening to a close. In contrast with one’s impression of the usual fixed villa menu, the food at House of Tung Flowers employs meticulous western-style techniques and the ingenious fusion of Hakka cuisine and Taiwanese ingredients to bring to each traveler an elegant and refined dining experience. James - promoting Taiwan’s tung flower season for the appreciation of the entire worldIn the morning, the mountain breeze urges you toward the breakfast table, where yet another sumptuous meal is laid out. Many summers ago, James decided to open his family home up to the public, to share the beautiful scenery with travelers by opening a guesthouse. The Hakka Affairs Council seized the opportunity to promote the Hakka tung flower season to attract large quantities of tourists, during which time House of Tung Flowers operates at full capacity every single day. Today, James has a full head of gray hair, yet in those first days, he truly was a pioneer, leading the way in the tung flower tourist market. With his endless Hakka passion and hospitality, he has been a great advocate of tung flower tourism during the month of May. Who would guess that he grew up in the Ximending neighborhood in Taipei! Yet he had always hoped to one day live in the tranquility of nature. Upon entering society, he continued his father’s construction business. At the turn of the millennium, in a time when many people could not even recognize a tung tree, he had come to admire the largest tung tree in Taiwan, right here beside House of Tung Flowers. He built his guesthouse and launched his one night, three meals slow living holiday package so that travelers can live in the mountains, and enjoy the tung flowers and delicious food. “Taiwan has many qualifications which surpass those of other countries, so we need to look at things from a new perspective, drawing in a tide of tourists from abroad, in order for Taiwan to build confidence!” With his warmth and sincerity, James invites travelers from around the world to come to this tranquil forest, to enjoy the tung flowers fluttering on the May breeze, like beautiful snow swirling in the air, and savor the taste of a truly happy vacation.

DescriptionTaichung|Lavender HouseSearching for a secret, purple-scented forestThe refreshing scent of lavender permeates the air, opening up your sense of smell as you let it envelope you. This is the charming experience of entering the Lavender Cottage park area of Hsinshe Township in Taichung. In this charming forest of flowers and plants, you discover a beautiful castle: Lavender House.A little fairy tale house in the forestYou traverse field after field of beautiful flowers and plants to get to your accommodations for the night; Lavender House, a pointy-roofed European style castle painted white and located in the well-known Lavender Cottage park area of Hsinshe Township in Taichung. Push open the wooden doors and you enter a fairy tale abode which might have been inhabited by a squirrel, or perhaps a white rabbit. The open layout with cathedral ceilings, the welcoming wooden furniture contrasts with refreshing whitewashed walls, and the big, fluffy teddy bear; it is as if Lavender House is your dreamlike home away from home, only deep in the woods. Your amiable housekeeper hands you some comforting herbal tea as you appreciate the sweet scent of the fresh-cut yellow daisies on the table. To one side of the table sits a plate of handmade lavender cookies. Everything has been arranged just for your enjoyment. Observing the vital little bonsai plant sitting on the sunny window sill as you listen to the insects singing outside in harmony with the light music playing indoors. This moment is just so delightful and rich.A purple wish, and a mind full of blessingsThe next morning, the sunshine guides you out into the Lavender Cottage park area as you walk step by step along a mysterious garden path. Into the misty mountain, through the flower fragrance, beside the magical merry-go-round, you arrive at the tallest wishing tree in the entire forest. You lower your head and whisper your heart’s deepest wish as the leaves of the tree quiver in the breeze as if tenderly granting your wish. This must be a secret forest created and left in this mundane world by purple fairies! Meet the purest version of yourself while walking unhurriedly beneath the gentle blessings of the lavender plants.

NameBear Forest-2
Mandarin Name雲山水有熊的森林二館民宿
DescriptionHualien|Bears in the Forest GuesthouseBears! A Comfortable Vacation on the LakesideYour car drives into Shoufeng township, situated in Hualien county between the central and coastal mountain ranges. Hidden away down laneways and between farmers’ fields you discover Yun Shan Shui Park. Across a bridge, several small white cottages rest between white clouds, green hills, and crystal-clear waters. Bears in the Forest Guesthouse invites you to enter a verdant landscape on the side of a lake, to enjoy a comfortable vacation… with bears and the forest!Bears will enjoy your vacation with youThe wind blows across a vast field of grass spread out like a green carpet. A big bear doll stands in the doorway outfitted like a British guard to welcome you. Pushing open the wooden doors, bear dolls one after another are to be found throughout the lobby. Coming here is all about relaxing with the bears!Happy music begins to play while the large glass windows reflect the lake and the emerald green scenery beyond. You only need to slow your pace, and breathe deep the fresh clean air. Look up from the grassy lawn at the starry night sky with the natural symphony of bird and insect song surrounding you.A dreamland by the lakesideAllen, the host of Bears in the Forest Guesthouse, recalls of when he came to Hualien to serve in the military. He was attracted to the great mountains and waters, and to the good air. At that time, he established his goal to return to this place and build a comfortable little house. He planned the gardens in European style and designed the rooms with Japanese elements. Allen has help from friends with business and marketing experience. He also has ties with the locals, and his diligent efforts bring people the same satisfaction and contentment as entering the forest. The Guesthouse is made up of 12 independent little houses in five different styles, such as four-person rooms suitable for bringing your parents or your children to enjoy together. Couples or pairs, on the other hand, might choose to check into a loft or an exquisite little double room. There is a little black teddy bear friend in every room, or several cute, loveable bear dolls lying on the sofa. Every washroom has a heating system and the pleasant smell of Chinese juniper. Enjoying your own private courtyard in the dim evening light, you feel inspired to soak in the outdoor hot spring and wash away your exhaustion. Local Hualien vegetables in your mealsThe moment you check in, cute bear cookies are laid on the table before you, paired with panna cotta, Hualien sweet potato cakes, and a variety of other local snacks. You can also book in advance for a chef’s tasting menu to enjoy delicious dishes made with local ingredients. In the morning, you cross the spacious lawn on your way to the lobby to enjoy a sumptuous Taiwanese style breakfast consisting of cold-dressed lotus root, salted egg with wild bitter gourd, beef and potato stew, and sauteed salmon accompanied by a bowl of sweet potato congee for a beautiful start to the day. You set out into the breeze on a reserved bicycle to admire the deep green scenery and tranquil atmosphere of the lake. At Bears in the Forest Guesthouse, you’ll feel the warmth of the bear’s embrace.
