National Taiwan University Museum of Anthropology (former Department of Anthropology Specimen Room)
Introduction
The Museum of Anthropology is part of National Taiwan University’s Department of Anthropology. The Museum houses a rich and valuable collection of Taiwan Aborigine artifacts of daily life, historical images, contractual documents, and prehistoric relics unearthed by archeological site surveys. Ethnological objects currently mainly consist of some 5,000 specimens of Taiwan indigenous material culture and about 8,000 historical images, the result of the systematic collection and conservation efforts begun in 1928 by Taihoku Imperial University’s “Institute of Ethnology.” There are several hundred thousand archeological specimens, the result of ongoing collection and excavation efforts at various Taiwan sites by department teachers and students, specimens that show the characteristics of Taiwanese prehistoric culture from different periods. The department’s museum emphasizes firsthand, field materials, and is a small-scale, professional anthropological museum of exceptional academic value for cultural preservation.
