You push the wooden doors and enter Tainan’s Chung Fu Inn!Preserving the enchanting iron window grates of a townhouseChung Fu Inn is co-owned by a designer from Taipei and a building contractor from Jiayi. They were attending a wedding banquet in Tainan when the old local townhouses caught their eye. They went on to apply their respective specialties in refurbishing it and named it Chung Fu Inn, using one character from each of their names.Each of Chung Fu Inn’s two townhouses preserves the original brick walls and ornate iron window grates. Once you enter the lobby, you are greeted by antique Chinese medicine cabinets and an ancient television set, which belong to the owners’ personal collections. As you climb the stairs in the Da Fu building, you see the ornate cement air vents along the top of the hallway walls. The stairwell of the outbuilding has been painted in rich and various colors, giving the old edifice a novel and vivid look.In the Da Fu building, antique wooden frames are reborn as partition screens to divide the interior of the Tranquil Room. In the Shu Huo Room, an entire wall of ornate iron window grates creates charming inverted patterns in the sunlight. Inside the outbuilding, the decor of the little Qing Xin Room incorporates vivid blue wall paint and wood-framed cabinets. Raise your head as you walk up the stairs to the third floor, and you are greeted by an array of fluttering, white butterflies. When you sit in the old rocking chair in Small Balcony Room, the butterflies will guide you in recollections of beautiful bygone times.Wooden doors, tatami mats, antique sofasBeyond the townhouses, you find two wooden single-storey houses as you enter the alley near the park, each of which are rented by one party at a time. The living room of Villa Number 45 is furnished with two retro sofas, and an elevated room to one side offers you a place to sit and rest. Take the steps onto the second floor and find a tatami sleeping area under the slanted roof, where you enjoy the air made warm and fragrant by the sunlight.Across the way sits Villa Number 47, with a similar Japanese layout and decorative elements. The bathtub on the first floor is remarkable, but even more surprising is the polished bar counter at the far end of the living room! After night falls, a cork pops out of a bottle of red wine and glasses are poured one-third full. It’s bottoms up in a toast to friendship!Now this is the passion of Tainan! When it comes to Tainan, the most anticipated part for most people is all the delicious and diverse foods. Chung Fu Inn is assisted in this regard by a varied host of well-known snack vendors.
