On a piece of land, there is a house where kids can play around its yard; a house from which one can see green mountains and blue sky, and hear the whisper of a running stream. In the year when I came back from abroad, I visited Luoshan village for some reason. At the moment I saw it for the first time, a voice came from my mind. “It’s gotta be here,” it said to me.The name ”Mr. Tanaka” occurred to me as I was driving a rental caravan on a high-way in New Zealand ("Tanaka" mans being in a paddy field in Japanese). Outside the windscreen there was snow shimmering on the top of the distant mountains. Warm afternoon sunshine had spread all over the valleys and lakes that we travelled through and passed by. With the soothing scenery ahead, all at once the name popped into my head. I turned to my wife on the passenger side, telling her, “Let's name our B&B ‘Mr. Tanaka.’ After all, we live in the middle of farm lands.” In fact, there are no paddy fields in New Zealand while dairy farms and orchards are everywhere. I had no idea why the name came across my mind all of a sudden but it just did when I had the placid view in my sight. After having checked it online, it turned out that “Mr. Tanaka” had not yet been registered and used commercially. Therefore it became the name of our B&B.It took us about half a year to have the contract signed and get ready to open. Limited by budget, we managed to do all we possibly could ourselves. But it still cost us more money than we had expected. For example, it took us three times to finally get the front yard turfed to our hearts’ content with the workers we hired. We had a wonderful memory of what we did. I found myself becoming a more skillful carpenter than I used to be through my working on installing plank walls and carpentering bookshelves. I also found the experience that I had earned as a part-time worker in a construction site coming in handy when I was doing the plaster work. We are proud of what we have achieved. You may not find anything fancy nor any handsome waiters or waitresses in Mr. Tanaka. What we have here, though, is a clean and cozy place that we carefully prepare for your stay and services that always come to you with a smile from us. We also guarantee your satisfaction with both the quality and quantity of our breakfast. Your time with Mr. Tanaka will be fun and full of ease. You can build your own mud oven on our yard and cook outdoors with it. You can paddle in the water of the ditch around the house. You can barbecue in the shade of trees. Or you can simply lie down on the lawn for a sunbath and enjoy the far-off mountain view under the azure sky. Mr. Tanaka is a home that we built with our own hands and a lot of love. Be our guests. Visit us and experience the beauty of the land.
